The
Power Department
Marubeni
Philippines Corporation's Power Department represents the various business
concerns of the Power Development Team of Marubeni Corporation, Tokyo
Head Office; whose interests range from PPA and ECA-based Independent
Power Producer (IPP) Projects, to EPC-Turnkey Power Plant Construction
Projects funded by ODAs and various multilateral ECAs. We also have full
Merchant Power Plants, Power Transmission and Distribution Businesses.
In
the Philippines, we have several 'project-finance' funded power plants,
with the PNOC and National Power Corporation as power off-takers. We also
intend to participate in various transmission and distribution EPC tenders
that will be pursued by Transco. We are also keen on participating in
EPC power plant projects of PNOC-EDC, like its Wind Farm Power Projects
and geothermal exploration works overseas.
The Power Department is also looking at bankrolling integrated power development
projects like the proposed Batman II. Our proposed development scheme
comprises of an LNG Terminal, a new gas fired power plant, the conversion
of an existing NPC combined cycle power plant into natural gas firing;
which are all situated in Limay, Bataan; and a sub-sea natural gas pipeline
crossing Manila bay from Bataan to Cavite. This will serve the fuel needs
of other power plants in Metro Manila which are expected to convert their
fuel systems to use natural gas.
We are also
actively promoting the use of Fuel Cells. Marubeni Corporation is the
Asian licensor of a molten carbonate fuel cell technology developed by
Fuel Cell Energy Inc. of Connecticut, USA. With the advent and soon widespread
availability of natural gas, Fuel Cell becomes a ready alternative of
'distributed' or 'on-site power', for use by a wide range of industries
needing critical and high quality power. Fuel Cell is a complete built-up
power generator (much like a big car battery) that runs on natural gas;
is clean, silent, has no environment-critical effluents, is more stable
and can be the replacement of noisy and dirty conventional diesel generators.
In 2007, Marubeni was successful in acquiring the Philippine Assets of
Atlanta based Mirant Corporation. Marubeni jointly owns with Tokyo Electric
Power Corporation, the 1218MW Sual Coal Fired Power Plant in Sual, Pangasinan
and 735MW Pagbilao Coal Fired Power Plant in Pagbilao Grande Island, Pagbilao,
Quezon in Southern Luzon. It also has a 20% stake in the 1251MW Natural
Gas-Fired Ilijan Power Plant in Ilijan, Batangas City. The Joint Venture
Company now owning and operating these power plant assets is Team Energy
Corporation. With this acquisition, Marubeni is now the largest foreign
IPP in the Philippines holding around 14% of the installed plant capacities
in the country; more than 32% of the installed plant capacity in Luzon,
and making Marubeni the largest foreign investor in the Philippines.
