Marubeni in the Philippines

Today, Marubeni Philippines Corporation remains one of the oldest and the most important among Marubeni's network of companies worldwide.

Japan's Marubeni Corporation started overseas activities in Manila, Philippines in 1909. The first lines of business were the importation of abaca fiber as raw material for rope manufacturing and the export of textiles. Branches in Cebu and Iloilo in the 1920's and Davao in the 1930's were opened to begin the network in the country. Until the 1950's, what is now Marubeni Philippines Corporation was known as Daido Boeki and Daiken Sangyo. In 1967, it was granted a branch status by the Philippines' Security and Exchange Commission (SEC). And in 1996, Marubeni Philippines Corporation was incorporated under Philippine laws.

At present, Marubeni is continuing to expand its operations in new markets that will eventually contribute to its ever-widening circle of partners, investments, and work force. Concurrently, it endeavors to improve on the efficiency that has made it a successful business enterprise the world over.

How MPC is organized <more>

Marubeni as a Sogo Shosha

The Japanese sogo shosha is a collection of various groups involved in different business fields. Each part of the organization has something unique to offer to the group, thereby, making it a formidable player in international trade.

Marubeni's transactions are greatly diversified among domestic, export, import and 3rd country (offshore) trade. Over 60% are transactions done with a country outside Japan. These activities involve trade, investments, wholesale, retail, counter trade, and financing.

On the worldwide scale, Marubeni operates through its global network composed of:

  • 154 offices (branches and subsidiaries) in 76 countries
  • 5,344 (Japan) headquarters employees (about 1,050 of them stationed abroad)
  • 2,398 overseas staff

In the course of executing its traditional core functions, Marubeni developed its expertise in areas of information, logistics, finance, risk management and coordination of small to large-scale projects. The application, innovation, interaction and integration of these functions are key to the success of Marubeni's international endeavors.

MPC and Social Responsibility

There can be no progress without sharing.
There can be no true development without giving back to the society you are in.
Marubeni Philippines Corporation believes in this wholeheartedly and has thus set in place two specific programs. One which aims to develop manpower skills and awareness and the other implements an environmental management system to ensure the maintenance of its work environment.

A. Marubeni Scholarship Foundation, Inc.

Developing the manpower skills of this country is integral to its economic progress. With this belief in mind, the Marubeni Scholarship Foundation Inc. was created in 1989 to commemorate the company's 80th year of business in the Philippines. Today, the Marubeni Scholarship Foundation Inc. has a roster of over 600 graduates from vocational and technical institutions, and is committed to granting scholarship assistance to underprivileged but deserving young Filipinos.
